水 族 马 尾 绣 · Shui People's Horsetail Hair Embroidery
Shui horsetail hair embroidery is an extraordinary textile art of the Shui people of Guizhou, in south-west China. Distinguished by its rare and intricate technique, each stitch is built around a strand of horsetail hair, wrapped finely in silk thread to create raised patterns of striking texture and beauty.
Traditionally embroidered by Shui women for ceremonial dress, children's carriers and other cherished textiles, these motifs draw on nature, legend and the symbolic language of daily life. Each design carries its own meaning, expressing hopes for protection, wellbeing and good fortune, while reflecting the cultural memory of the Shui community.
Handed down through generations, this refined craft is both an artistic tradition and a living record of Shui heritage. Today, it continues through contemporary handmade works, preserving its unique character while bringing its quiet beauty to new audiences.
Artisans hand-wrap silk thread around three to four strands of horsehair, creating the distinctive horsehair thread used in Shui embroidery. This unique process gives the embroidery its strength, flexibility, and sculptural form.
Traditional motifs are transferred to indigo-dyed linen or cotton base fabric. Many patterns are passed down through memory — never written, only shown hand to hand.
The wrapped horsetail hair is couched onto the fabric surface following the design outlines, then the interior shapes are filled with dense silk stitching in vivid colours.
Every piece in our collection is an original handmade work, directly from artisans in Sandu County, Guizhou.
